Why do some veterans refuse their benefits or wait until crisis time to look into them?
I could say most- but that's making a blanket statement. I am the veterans affairs liaison for an adult day center in Savage MN. SarahCare Adult Day Center serves people with disabilities ages 18+. Over half of our participants are veterans.
At SarahCare, our goal is to keep families together in their own communities for as long as possible. We have participants with diagnoses from end stage Alzheimer's to isolation and depression. We have many programs like intergenerational activities, outings to places in the community, men's club, as well as music and pet therapy to name a few. We offer 2 meals a day, transportation assistance, flexible schedule, and financial assistance. To get a better feel for the Center our website is www.sarahcaremn.com .
Being in the military myself, I can say there is soooo much information we receive from the minute we raise our right hand. I can understand how some things can be over looked or put on the back burner. Luckily, I'm in this position at my job where learning about all the benefits out there is not only helping the veteran, but myself as well.
For this entry I want to first ask the question of the day......Why do some veterans refuse their benefits or wait until crisis mode to look into them?
Second, I want to make a statement. If you are a veteran of any age, meet with your County Veteran Service Officer. Bring with you your DD214 and get to know your CVSO. He/She is there to help you. Even if you don't need any thing now, you have the process started.
